Call for trustees

Update November 2021: Due to the fantastic response to our call for trustees, we now have our new board up and running and are working on reopening CLASSS from 2022. Register your child using this form or register for volunteering here.

A status update and call for Trustees

Community Leeds After School Study Support (CLASSS) has been providing supplementary English, Maths and Literacy support to young people in Leeds for over 10 years. Based out of Technorth Family Learning Centre in Chapel Allerton, we hold classes on Thursday evenings for over 60 children, from school year 2 to year 11. Our dedicated tutors are almost entirely volunteers, many of whom have been involved with the charity for a number of years. In 2019, we celebrated our 10th anniversary, with over 160 attendees at our celebration event.

Impact of Coronavirus

When the COVID-19 pandemic hit, CLASSS was hit hard as we lost access to our venue indefinitely and also lost a number of our key management team members due to the change in circumstances. Initially we provided an online service, but a number of barriers to entry for both volunteers and pupils caused momentum to slow.

After 16 months of uncertainty, restrictions have started to ease and we have been informed that we can now make future bookings at our venue. We have successfully managed to maintain enough funds to comfortably cover our rental and required supplies. A number of our dedicated volunteers are keen to return, and we’ve received a large number of enquiries from parents about when we will open up our classes again. Many children and young people have been negatively impacted by school closures and so the need for our service is higher than ever.

However, we cannot open up classes until we rebuild our management team. If we do not recruit enough active trustees who can help distribute the workload, we will begin proceedings to permanently close down CLASSS as a charitable organisation. The board has set a deadline of three months, until the end of September 2021, to recruit and establish a number of new trustees to take the organisation forward.

Call for Trustees

We are looking for between 4-8 people to help us rebuild CLASSS, but also to sustain and future proof the organisation for years to come.

The intention is for the board of trustees to work together to hire and establish a small management team to run our Thursday sessions. The trustee board will create the foundation for our volunteers to continue doing their great work. As mentioned above, we have a venue, funds, supplies, volunteers and an established community need, but we do not have the management team in place to tie it all together.

This group of new trustees will join our existing board of five, but the roles of Chair and Secretary will become vacant at this year’s AGM in September. We’re looking for active trustees, with the time and commitment to manage their area of expertise and help us establish new processes to keep the charity running. If that sounds like you, please get in touch (contact details below).

Our objective is to establish the trustee board by September, and work together to restart classes from January 2022 onwards.

Though not essential, desirable areas of expertise we are looking for are:

Someone who can run the recruitment of 2-5 paid members of staff to run our Thursday sessions, and manage employment law / HR procedures

Volunteer engagement

Someone to be responsible for volunteer recruitment and engagement, either acting directly as a volunteer or by recruiting and supervising someone to fill this role

Health and Safety

Someone who can help us manage our transition back after COVID-19, implementing safety measures

Charity governance

Understanding our constitution, maintaining our policies and compliance with all requirements of the charity commission

Education experience

Curriculum / teaching experience, overseeing all classroom and teaching matters, safeguarding

Other desirable skills

Experience running small charities, project management, working with children and young people

Currently our meetings are held remotely every 4-6 weeks, our next meeting is on 11th August at 6pm via Zoom.

To register your interest, please email with your name, email address, telephone number and details of your relevant skills and experience (especially as it relates to the above).

A member of the trustee team will come back to you.

Thank you for helping us save our organisation!
